A recent newspaper had an article about finding homes for

our old "friends": books.  Some of the places on the list

pick up books, some you have to ship to but it is a nice

list to save for future reference.  The point is to 
keep the books out of the landfill.

Don't forget about your local used/rare bookstore.  They

will sometimes take donations of books that they can't purchase.

Remember, used bookstores don't receive tax money like libraries do,

so if you have a local used bookstore - that PAYS taxes, I suggest

going there first with your donations.

U.S. Education Comparisons and Challenges

I've written to my state legislators to find out how the high achieving other countries handle some of these challenges found in the U.S. classrooms. There are probably other challenges I haven't addressed but since the U.S. is #14 (or lower) according to the recent news reports, I'd like to know how the top countries are handling these challenges so that we can learn and implement them. At this time, I don't see why the teachers are being held totally responsible for the lower test scores - maybe the feedback I get will convince me that the teachers are at fault for the lower test scores - but right now I think that unless we have perfectly achieving parents, with perfect legislators enacting the perfect budgets and curriculum with the perfect ready to learn students, we just aren't going to have the perfect classrooms - even if we have perfect teachers.

Florida has just enacted legislation that the teachers' pay (increases?) be based 50% on the test results of the students. I suggest that the administrator's bonuses and pay increases for the legislators also be tied to students' performance as they play a roll in what is taught in what kind of setting for how many hours and days per session. Here is the letter I wrote:

Public Education Comparisons: The news reports U.S. is #14 or so in education in comparison to other countries. Please tell me the top five countries and what tests are used to compare. I doubt that the comparisons take in all of the diversity the U.S. has to cope with in the classrooms.

How are these factored in:

1. Multiple non-English languages as native language. It is hard to teach people in English who speak other native languages, yet the students from other countries are allowed into our classrooms. Some FL school districts have 14 different native languages coming into the classrooms – teachers don’t have control over that yet are challenged to get those students prepared for the same tests as native English speaking students. Which other countries scoring higher than the U.S. have this challenge?

2. Class content is mandated by legislators, not teachers. Time spent teaching sex ed, drug ed, manners , etc - how is this factored in? How is this in other countries? Or do those schools focus only on “testable” content?

3. Handicapped students are mainstreamed into many classes. Do other countries higher in standings than U.S. have severely mentally impaired students in their classes? Even if the tests are not factored in, severely mental and physical handicapped students take more time and focus from the teacher and other students (providing physical assistance and mentoring).

4. Days/hours/holidays are mandated by various gov and administrations - not teachers - how does our school calendar compare? Many districts provide “planning” time to teachers during the school day. This takes away from instruction time whether all teachers want it or not.

5. Expelling/disciplining disruptive students - U.S. teachers don't have control of who is in their classes. How is this handled in those countries scoring better than U.S.? If other countries’ teachers or administrators are allowed to expel students, the ones left, wanting to learn will probably score higher than those kept in classes and schools where they don’t want to be (based on their behavior).

Parents who are drug abusers, unemployed, homeless, victims of domestic violence and/or had trouble in schools themselves will have a hard time sending off a well rested, well fed, ready to learn students who will come home to a quiet place to do homework, eat a well balanced meal and get a good night’s sleep after some school or family enrichment activity.

I'm not a teacher. I've never been a teacher. I don't have a student in school currently but have grandchildren in various schools. There are no perfect classrooms but there never will be unless we have perfect legislators setting the class content along with perfect teachers implementing it, perfect students ready and willing to learn and perfect parents ready and able to reinforce the classroom at home, getting the student prepared to learn.

I'd like to know that we are comparing apples to apples. Please tell me how other countries handle these challenges to come out ahead of U.S. in student tests.

This is the size of the new Android credit card reader by Square. When you insert it into the phone, there is a place at the opposite end to slide the card. Supposedly the company deposits the money right into your checking acc't. It took about two minutes to sign up for the acc't,. Tomorrow I may have the opportunity to use it, so we'll see how it works. I have no idea what happens re: a receipt. Unfortunately, my phone doesn't have a printer (next one probably will) but they say that something about a receipt so maybe it is sent via email??? Isn't this exciting? Makes paying the bill for the android phone a lot easier. (I have a T-Mobil 3G). Imagine not having to purchase one of those expensive wireless credit card machines!

Marting Luther King Day Reading

I have nothing to offer for sale today but I do have 3 suggestions of something for you to purchase and read in remembrance of MLK:

1. Broyard, Bliss: ONE DROP, My Father's Hidden LIfe - a Story of Race and Family Secrets. Little Brown & Co, 2007. Anatole Broyard was the daily book critic for the NY Times for 10 years and columnist and editor at the NY Times Book Review for several years. His son and daughter grew up white in Connecticut but at his death were told that he was of mixed race.

Written by his daughter, Bliss, the book is detailed, indexed and has lots of source notes. She spent years researching and writing her racial heritage that began in New Orleans Creole community, she reports on the culture in New Orleans before, during and after the Civil War and continues into New York during the depression. I'm just finishing the book and am amazed at the author's writing and research abilities. She manages to blend the historical facts with the social settings and turn her history into a very interesting book.

I think the book does a lot to explain the history of race and racial relations in the U.S., especially in New Orleans where racial blending was socially acceptable years prior to the Civil War. The question to be answered: is Bliss, raised white in CT, still white after finding out that she has Black relatives? Or did ONE DROP of black blood, make her black also? What defines race?

2. Lewis, Earl and Heidi Ardizzone: LOVE ON TRIAL; Norton, 2001. I've mentioned this one before - A racially mixed woman marries the son of a extremely wealthy man of New York society. When Dad finds out about the marriage, he "forces" (weak) son to sue for an annulment so that he doesn't have to pay her alimony. The marriage took place in the 20s between Alice Jones and Leonard Kip Rhinelander - the author takes the unusual approach of relating the trial through newspaper reports throughout the country so we get to see the trial through not only the family involved but reporters.

Racial intermarriage was not illegal in New York in the 20s but was in other parts of the country. Again, a very interesting story (how often today does a woman have to disrobe in front of the jury to prove her case?). How often does a father try to prove his son is simple to win his case?

And the ending was quite surprising.

3. Tim Wise, White Like Me: Reflections on Race from a Privileged Son Soft Skull Press. A white man describes the benefits of being white. I haven't finished it yet.

Earl Lewis and Heidi Ardizzone co-wrote: LOVE ON TRIAL; An American Scandal in Black and White and if you have any interest in racial and social aspects of race and interracial marriages in the U.S., this is the book for you.

While the basic true story is of the trial of Leonard Rhinelander vs: his wife, Alice Jones, 1924 in New York, the authors have taken an unusual approach and gave a snapshot of the U.S. during the trial by quoting various newspaper articles about the trial from around the country. The same day's testimony was reported differently in Mississippi than in Minnesota and Florida and Michigan. The points of the trial to annual the marriage of a white millionaire's son to a "not so white" working class woman were editorialized about differently in newspapers that had a largely black readership than in those papers with a largely white readership.

Was it an interracial marriage? Was Alice "passing" as white? Had she deceived her rich lover? What is the definition of "white"? Of "colored"? Of "Negro"? Can you tell by looking? Why did Al Jolson testify? Did his performance in "black face" influence social (in)justice? How does Irving Berlin fit into the race picture?

And if interracial marriage isn't illegal in the state why can there be a trial to annual the marriage?

This is an extremely interesting book about an extremely interesting topic and trial. There are many copies available for sale on the various book sites - don't ask - I'm not selling my copy!

Congratulations to the authors Earl Lewis and Heidi Ardizzone for a job well done and to Norton for publishing it.

TERMAL POOLS in Poland

A few of you wanted to see what the pools were like in the new "water park" in Poland. Here is the address for Baseny Termalne (termal pools) in Bukowina Tatrzanska:

There are 9 pools, temps up to 94 degrees, I think. All very modern as you see, located out in the country by the ledge shown in one of the posts, and all high tech. One of the pools had roller beds under water - if you could get on them there was a place to lay your head and just relax in the warm water while the rollers relaxed your muscles. I don't think U.S. has anything quite like it.

One of the nice features of the facility was the buzzer system. Every minute or predetermined time a buzzer went off in the most crowded pools and everyone had to move over one spot. No one could "hog" the roller beds or water jets, etc. It was all very well organized, clean and user friendly. I haven't swam in an outdoor/indoor pool in the snow in a long time - a very relaxing and fun thing to do again.

A Mountain Lodge Holiday

When you go on vacation for a month, you can't just sit in the condo and read! You go places, do things - or so my friend, Narges says. And a nice trip to the mountains is just what is needed to get away from the big town of Bielska-Biala. So, in an hour and a half or so ride we were able to enjoy some lovely countryside:

See the two boat ramps? No one told us which one would be for loading. A boat load of people got into lines ... at each one and then made a dash for "right" one at the last minute.

Wawel Castle, Krakow, Poland

Narges gifted us with a private English language tour throughout the Castle in Krakow. I was going to take notes...because I can't learn and remember 1000+ years of Polish history in 3 hours ( I am sure I heard every detail, however). Luckily WikiPedia has a nice summary for your review and a couple of photos that we couldn't get. The tour guide was an art history major with a minor in Polish history - and is/was a teacher so she was perfect for the tour guide of the castle. I'm putting in a few photos of the art. Amazing stuff that people can do in the art field!

The Gothic Wawel Castle in Cracow in Poland was built at the behest of Casimir III the Great and consists of a number of structures situated around the central courtyard. In the 14th century it was rebuilt by Jogaila and Jadwiga of Poland. Poland and Italy Vacation Food

In Krakow - Pancakes and
Goolash (much different than in U.S.- more of a beef stroganoff. An option was french fries with it).

In a mountain resort area in Poland, these cheeses were for sale in a souvenier area

Friends of Narges made and served maybe the best food we had while we were gone!

It was cold in Krakow but who cares - hot wine with vodka !

Now why don't we have cheese like this in U.S.? For $2.50 per round?

The farmer's market in Bielsko, Poland was within walking distance of the condo - the pictures above and below show the many good choices. Bring your own bag.

One picture I didn't get was that of a woman selling eggs - with an 8x10 color photo of her chicken who laid the eggs! The young woman was evidently very proud of the eggs' heritage! I was too "shy" to take a photo of the man dipping fresh milk out of an "old fashioned" milk can for a customer.

Venice lunch - a good sized pizza for $8.00, wine was $3.00. It tasted about the same as in U.S.

Now we're back in Poland in the Tatra Mountain area and the rainbow trout. The staff suggested that we split one fish because of the size - U.S. doesn't do that. This is all that was served unless you ordered side dishes. We ordered hot beer - much better than it sounds to the uninitiated.

This lettuce is also from the farmer's market. Isn't it beautiful! I sure wish we had this kind of lettuce in U.S.!

This is one meal I made after Narges left: Fresh salad, red wine, lamb chop and perogies.

All that and I lost 3 lbs. while we were gone. All that walking, maybe. Or maybe it was the (hot) beer or wine at lunch? I like that possibility better!

Venice, Italy

We arrived in Venice at 10:00 AM after a 15 hr. bus trip from Poland. We were told it would be very warm. It wasn't. Luckily I still had my coat with me from Poland. We arrived by boat (Venice is an island, after all.) After getting set up with our local tour guide, one of the first things on the schedule was the gondola ride. It isn't too romantic at 10:00AM but it certainly began our day nicely. After not sleeping much on the bus, no shower or change of clothes, we have pictures of us in Venice - not how I prefer to look for the camera but better than not being there! You'll see by the last picture how we felt by 4:00PM when it was time to get back to the boat, to get to the bus to ride another 1.5 hrs to get to our hotel. That first day was our clue that this tour was going to be a grueling tour.

A Child's Garden of Verses by Robert Louis Stevenson

Do you remember the poem "My Shadow" - at least the first couple of lines? I'm sure that it was grandmother who quoted it to me (maybe I should say "at" me).

Scottish poet, essayist and author Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-1894) wrote it in addition to the more well known Treasure Island. The Saalfield Publishing Company published A Child's Garden of Verses illustrated by C.M. Burd which includes a short version of "Shadow". I was able to purchase a copy of this linen book recently and have it available for sale ($45.00). Here is a photo of the book and a full version of the poem. Enjoy. What a fun and busy area! Thanks to my second cousin once removed (yes, I know what that means now) Dawn Newman and her parner Joe, Bob and I had a great time on a guided tour of San Francisco Saturday and San Jose on Friday. Of course we got to see the Golden Gate Bridge and the down town wharf area but we also walked through China Town. We had a quiche lunch in a small lunch cafe, toured the Cable Car Museum, rode one of the famous cable cars up and down the famous San Francisco hills and went through the farmer's market where you can buy some great olive oil for $174/gal.

We drove by Golden Gate Park and stopped at the beach. To swim there requires a wet suit so the beach was not very busy! We saw many more hats and scarves than swim suits. The air temp was mid 60s but windy by the beach so swim suits were not the order of the day. It was a great temp for running around the city, however.

San Jose is bigger than we thought and has a great upscale restaurant/shopping area where we were treated to a very good dinner sitting outside watching the people and their dogs walk by. An interesting twist to the meal: there is something call a wine "flight" sold: 3 servings of different wines - 2 oz. each. But since they come in a regular wine glass, it looks as though the party has really begun when two or three people order the "flights". You get a card to grade the wines in your "flight". I have no idea what that is all about but I suppose that it is a tag along of the wine tasting that brings so many people to the area. The "flight" was $13.00 for a total of 6 oz - the traditional "pour" - or serving of wine. An interesting twist to ordering wine with dinner.

Just a note about the trip to San Jose - the GPS was a life saver! We had to go on 5 different freeways and that Garmin told us exactly where to turn all athe way there and back. I can't imagine we would ever have made it without that technology! Also, we enjoyed seeing the windmills - maybe windmill farms? We saw these in TX as well and while I don't know much about them, I hope they are working because they add something very interesting to the landscape. Trouble is, getting a photo is difficult as I see them as we're driving by at 65-70 mph.

We had a great time and got back to the book store business in time to search for a number of orders so they can be ready to ship on Monday. We fly out on Wednesday so have to wrap the fun up Tuesday. I can find my card reader right now so I have few photos to put up here tonight - I'll add to them when I find it.

Bob and I are enjoying the wine country and Yosemite in Northern California. We're having a lot of fun shopping in all of the antique shops and used book stores - mercy, wine and books - how good does it get?

The day trip to Yosemite was overwhelming. We needed to stay for the week to see anything but at least we've been inside the park!

We're in the foot hills of the Sierra Nevada mountains and many of the roads have hair-pin curves. Many houses are set up on the top at a very high "hill" and I just don't see how the owners can use the driveway daily - it looks more like the road the mules use to go to the floor of the Grand Canyon!

The wineries all have different personalities. One has a Tuscany feel, one has a country "y'all come have a picnic" feel and others barely look inviting at all (we didn't even get out of the car). I think there is probably a good lesson in there somewhere for book dealers all running small businesses - how inviting does our business look? They may have had very good wine at good prices but we didn't go in to find out.

The winery below (3rd down) showing tables is a shaded place to enjoy the views allows you to bring a picnic lunch and enjoy the bottle of wine you buy right there - that is the comfortable, welcoming place I actually purchased a bottle of wine.

The weather is a bit hot for our liking (OK, we admit it - hot doesn't even begin to describe the 102+ temps here for the last few days) but by 8 or 9, we're cool again. Take a look at a couple of photos of the area.

We infrequently have cell phone service where we are staying but we do have computer access, so email is the only way we have been contacting people. No CNN, FOX or other 24 hr news and as far was we're concerned , all is well with the world! We sleep very good at night. Maybe no news helps. Madlyn

Motel rates

Have you even negotiated the price you pay for a night in a motel?
I thought rates were rates - who knew that you could negotiate? We didn't start out to negotiate last night, we asked the price, were told a rate and just said, no, think we'll just keep traveling awhile longer and began to leave. The clerk said to wait a minute - maybe he could find a discount - and asked my husband what was in our budget. Well, my husband told him $35.00 less than what we had been quoted - but added that we had AAA and AARP. The clerk quoted another rate, Bob said, no, sorry .... and the clerk said OK - I'll just put you in as the "manager's special"!

So, in a nice - enough national chain with a small, warm pool, close to Cracker Barrel for dinner, we got a $35.00 discount - and points toward our next stay with that chain.

Tonight we asked what the rate was and was quoted $20.00 more than what was actually posted on the sign outside. Honestly, what's up with that? We got the room for the rate posted but the people coming in behind us just left when he told them the higher price.

All these little battles adds stress - takes energy people need for life's wars!

Pawn Brokers

I think is is on the history channel that we 
have a show called something like "Pawn Brokers from Las Vegas". There 
are 3 generations working together appraising and buying items brought 
into their pawn shop. The main character/manager, Rick, likes books.  We 
didn't get to the shop while we were recently in Las Vegas but the 
following week an ad appeared that two of the guys would be in our local 
Port Charlotte Pawn Shop.

My husband and I decided to go meet them and take a couple of books I've 
had for 2 or 3 years to see what Rick's response would be.  I selected 
two books "U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey Showing the Progress of the 
Work Ending with June, 1895 Parts 1 & 2" and the same but 1897.  They 
have multiple fold out maps and are gov. publications.

Rick passed on them because 1. they came from a public library (it shows 
that a way too many were published) and 2. the maps are not in color - 
no one buys those.  He said the only books worth buying are signed 
literary classics.

He referred me to the local pawn shop owner nearby (who evidently got 
the left overs from the Stars).  He passed on the books also, said even 
if anyone ever bought them, it would be for $5 or $10.00 each.

We all know that funny things happen when you move books around:  I just 
sold two of the 4 I have for $125.00 each.

I hope the Stars return soon - I have a couple more books that have been 
hanging around for awhile!

Home at Last

Last night at 8:30 we arrived home after a 3 and 1/2 week absence. I don't know how people travel all of the time - it isn't for me. Travel (to me) is tiring and disorienting. I certainly can't focus on a job while traveling or stay involved in community activities or projects. I just can't imagine how parents who travel are able to stay involved in their childrens' lives. My hats off to those who do it well.

After we left our duties at the book store in St. Augustine, we stopped in the Tampa area to celebrate Jalen's 1st birthday. This year just flew by! He is a very happy and healthy little boy - and cute, I must say. I'm putting up a couple of photos - you can see he can toss a basket ball already.

It seems that he enjoys getting "older" as tossing those balls is about as much fun as he has had yet! He did not like that silly birthday hat and he was not excited about having birthday cake frosting on his hands - he put his hands out for his Dad to wipe them off.

Well, it is great that he had family present to celebrate his 1st birthday and that they have been around to watch him grow this far. I still love those Jalen hugs and kisses!

Well, Friends. I'm back at my first love - working in a used book store! By helping out at Wolf's Head Books I'm able to do the parts of the business I love - sell and buy but don't have to do the parts I don't love - worry about the rent, the orders, the employees, the insurance, the d.b. %, etc. Pure book selling - or reading if there is no selling :).

The weather is beautiful, there is a festival in town, I'm living across the street from the Atlantic and about as happy as I can be away from my own bed. Right now I'm very happy that I offered to volunteer to help a friend.

We miss you, Harvey Wolf.

Used Book Stores in Texas

I've driven/ridden over 2000 miles in the past 2 weeks and have visited antique malls, used book stores and library resale areas in numerous towns. It would seem to me that Texas is a hard state to find reasonably priced books in v.g. condition. Either the books weren't of any interest to me, they were very expensive or in very poor condition. Or all 3!

In one town (not in TX) a bookstore I went into was so small and so crowded that I literally could barely move sideways down the aisle (walk would indicate forward momentum). There were 2 L shape areas nestled so close together that I though the clerk was kidding when he said any FL history would be inside the area! And I'm not THAT big a person (petite people would have had a problem). Anyways, there were books everywhere in this tiny shop. When the guy said he had been there since 1986 - and I almost asked if he had sold anything yet!

It is just truly a fun experience to see how so many shops are arranged, what kind of stock they have and get the feel of the place. And I don't understand shops where the new "customer" isn't acknowledged or welcomed when s/he enters the store. A simple "hi" or "welcome" would be nice and many dealers don't offer it - I wonder why.

The Riverwalk is more upscale than what we thought - not run down at all! We took the boat road on the river and were surprised that it is 25 ft. deep in some places. Surprised because there are so many tourists walking around and in many places there are no railings - you just have to figure out for yourself that if you could fall in - I didn't even see a warning: "Notice: Water is wet, cold and deep _ Caution should be used!". I wonder why we need notices on carry out coffee cups that say coffer "may be hot" but we don't need railing with crowds?

We also went to the Alamo - just because it was there and listened to the history of the area. The volunteer did a very nice job. Our weather was threatening with lots of rain in the area but we had quite a nice day.

really loving the Fort Worth area. Dallas is BIG but Fort Worth is manageable and has some history.

can't have a good art fair without food. I saw this "plate" of "insects" being shared by a very happy looking couple. For outside fair food, I think I prefer a carmled apple!

Joel Hill, Bob's brother-in-law loves to take Max, his Babe Magnet to such events! Max soaks up the attention and honestly, so did Joel. Bob is now considering a small dog :(

Bob's sister has been cooking wonderful meals for us, I'm gaining weight and our vacation is only a week old! Once we don't have these steak and shrimp and pasta dinners with bottles of wine, maybe I'll be able to focus more on salads :(. Not nearly as much fun.

If anyone is considering a TX vacation, I suggest this time of the year. We're hoping to see some of the blue bonnets and other wild flowers as we drive to San Antonio. The weather is wonderful and the antique malls we've been to have been very, very big! Texas sized, I suppose. Big enough to have shopping carts! I've never been to an antique store with a shopping cart and I don't think I like it - sticking antiques into a Big Lots type cart just doesn't do anything for the ambiance of the shopping experience.

Well, today we're going to Grapevine and Central Marketplace, a "destination" shopping experience for international and deli foods. Yummm.

Day 2; The TX trip

No shopping today - just driving. But we finally got out of Florida! It was 605 miles from our place to the FL border - that is about 1/2 of the trip to Bedford, TX according to the AAA Trip Tik.

We stopped just before we left the state and I took a picture of a nice park that looked like there weren't any aligators lurking! It really felt like "home" - a non-threatening park. In S.W. FL there is always the threat of aligators or wild boars or monitor lizards, etc. so a nice park with just trees was a treat!

We're in Lafayette, LA tonight with the weather in 60s. We had some rain during our drive with the temps in the 70s, just lovely driving temps today. We didn't stop at the Pensacola Beaches because of the rain but did see the huge interchange leading to the beaches. Huuummm...navigating that will be a challenge. We should be able to do it with all of the navigation equipment/supplies we have with us. I've been testing out my new GPS, Bob is using his favorite AAA Trip Tik and we tossed in the maps AAA gave us and an Atlas (I need the bigger picture).

The MSN that the Garmin GPS uses would have made us take a couple of very wrong turns if we hadn't used our heads and not listened to "her". I put in "Bedford, TX" while we were still in Alabama - that may be a bit of a stretch - maybe directions should be for more local addresses 0r shorter distances. We'll see but at least I'm getting pretty good at using it - even got us to the right motel tonight without clearing out the original destination. Maybe I'll learn how to tell it to stay on major roads to get me to major cities?

1st Day: TX Trip

Sometimes vacations start out very well. We got loaded and on the road at 8:00AM as planned, and other than some delay about 20 miles into the trip on I75, we made it to our first stop: Tallahassee.

The desk clerk told me that there was an antique area about 10 miles away when we checked into the motel. So we drove to Havana, FL instead of going to the pool. The pictures show a little of what we found – a lot of stores in a small town that have been turned into antique shops or malls. A few are huge, a few are tiny, a few are all antiques while others are more gifts/art and some are a combination. There is quite a bit of great big new and used furniture, also.

One shop had a mid-sized room filled with books. The books were nicely displayed, individually priced with a variety of topics. Many of the other stores or booths had a small variety of books but most weren’t in very good condition.

Bob was happy to find a die cast Volkswagon made in Italy in one booth. He said that a 1/24 scale made in Italy is just what he was looking for! Luckily it was priced low enough so he could purchase it and resell for a bit of profit. That buy made his day.

On our way out of the neat, clean antique town we just had to stop at the junk store! From the sublime to the ridiculous.

I didn’t know anything about Havana, FL but was very impressed with how neat and clean and friendly it was. If you have the time to get off I10 when you’re in the area, stop and shop for awhile. It is easy to find.

Boca Grande, FL Day Trip

I like day trips. And from my location in S.W. FL I can get to a lot of beautiful locations and back home in one day. So, now that I don't have to be to work at noon (or just getting out of work then), Bob and I took a day trip to Boca Grande (Gasparilla Island), just about 5 miles via Charlotte Harbor - but 30 miles (one way) via car - which is how Bob and I went. Interesting detail about getting there - there is a $4.00 fee to get over the bridge to the Island but my Lee County transponder isn't accepted - we were told this is a private bridge. (I don't understand a private bridge with a fee on a public road but decided to not hold up traffic while I questioned the fact.)

Locally Boca is known for a couple of things besides fishing and beaches: it is 1. the Bushes' Florida winter vacation site and 2. Iguanas. I didn't go to see either of these attractions but to see the private Johann Furst library I'd read about some time ago.

It was built (or endowed by) Mr. Furst who wanted it to be a library, resource center and community center for his favorite FL vacation location. At the time there was no public library on this small island - which is a part of two different counties (the southern half is part of Lee County, the northern portion is part of Charlotte County).

The library is charming as you can see in these photos. With doors made from the hard local cypress trees and the landscaped courtyard, it is a charming, relaxing place to visit. There are two display cases of named local and national sea shells, a small lending library, a nice selection of local history books that cannot be checked out and a juvenile book room.

There is also a locked displayed case with a page from the Book of the Dead ( "The Book of Dead" is the usual name given to the ancient Egyptian funeral text, a page from the Gutenberg Bible, a page from the Vulgate (early Catholic translation) and a "stone tablet" (literally a stone with text) http://www.bl.uk/treasures/gutenberg/makingbible.html . These are all very nice holdings for a small community island library!

Lee County has since opened a small lending library on the island in a very nice building so the small year 'round community does have access to a lending library with access to the books in the county-wide system.

There were lots of tourists, the day was beautifully sunny and warm, the beaches were windy and the water cool but since we weren't there for shopping or the water, we were very pleased with the day's outing. We visited both libraries, didn't stand in line to eat and didn't run over an Iguana - or tourist (both of which you just have to watch out for) so we had a successful day trip. I'll try to add a couple of the very nice photos I was able to take.

Hard Road by Barbara D'Amato

For my recent birthday, a friend sent me a copy of HARD ROAD by Barbara D'Amato - an author and a book I didn't know anything about.

I'm happy to have a copy but not because the writing was so good. I don't know what age group the author was targeting but hopefully it was the adult market. It must not have been for the 10 year old market, either because some nice lady's head got shot into pieces early on at an Oz festival in Chicago.

Because it is a mystery, there was a lot of running through the Chicago tunnels, some reporter trying to figure out the culprit and threats on the main character's life. All of this intrigue while using Oz characters' names that the reader is supposed to be able to track down to the original character in the Oz books - a puzzle within a mystery. An unusual writing style I would guess.

However, to me the more interesting part of the book is the last 40 pages where the author's son, Brian D'Amato addresses L. Frank Baum's life, career and the never ending theory's of what he really meant in his Oz stories. He mentions Macatawa, MI where Baum built Sign of the Goose, a cottage on Lake Michigan so named because he bought it with the money he made from Father Goose: His Book, Baum's pre-Oz book. I used to live in Holland, MI which has now pretty much absorbed "Macatawa" although there is a post office there still with that name.

Brian also addresses various criticisms of Baum's books, some criticism of Baum (specifically the articles he wrote referred to as the "Sitting Bull" editorials, "The Wooden Gargoyles", "Transmutation" and "Rough Play". If you are interested in different interpretations of the Oz books and don't have this one, it might be of interest to you. The same is true if you are an Oz collector and don't have this one yet. It was published in 2001 by Scribner with an illustrated dust jacket. My copy is signed :).

Retirement Begins With a Party!

My work at the medical library has ended after 7 yrs and 11 months. When I was younger, this was called "unemployment" but now that I'm 65 it is called "retirement" :)

One major difference is that there was a very nice luncheon held to send me out the door. Many of the very nice library volunteers took more time out of their week to attend and wish me well. I was quite surprised and moved by their generosity of time, sentiments and gifts! They all chipped in to purchase a Garmin GPS and suitcase to get me started on my retirement travels. I also received flowers, balloons, and a couple of other more personal gifts along with the cards.

I don't
know how many volunteers I worked with over the years but I had the opportunity to meet a lot of very, very nice people and I hope that I'm able to keep in touch with many of them.

Birthday Celebration Continues

Well, What can I say? My dughter took me out to dinner to celebrate my birthday - even though it was a few days late. Chedders - a restaurant I've never been to but hope to go back! They do serve a nice sized drink...(I wasn't driving!)

Medicare Age is Here!

Yesterday I officially turned 65. I have my Medicare card. I have supplemental PPO coverage. I have Social Security. Supposedly I am ready for the future - at least that's what I've been told since Medicare was enacted - wasn't that under Lyndon Johnson? I've worked hard all these years to maintain insurance coverage, worrying about what job to take - not based on what I liked but on insurance coverage all the time glad to know that at 65 I would be covered by Medicare. Society would provide security.

And now I'm here and not feeling all that secure. Lower pay for women turned into lower social security payments based on my life long lower income. Medicare is being threatened by greed, no monitoring of abuse, the expense of more technology and the baby boomers coming along 'en masse.

I didn't and couldn't possibly have saved up the million dollars during my working years (isn't that the minimum "they" say we need?). And a bunch of what I managed to save was taken (lost) in the most recent Wall Street event. 2/3 of the "value" on our condo has been wiped out. They actually sell for 20% less than what we paid for ours 9 years ago.

I'm not feeling all that secure at 65. But I celebrated with friends and neighbors and all was well for the day. And I'm healthy, there is something liberating about being healthy - an optimism, a blessing that I have that allows me to celebrate not only reaching 65 but getting here without pain or limitations. A belief that I've made it this far and I'll make it further.

Retirement Coming Up Soon!

In about two months, I'll be retiring from my library job. Hopefully, I'll be able to concentrate on selling books and other collectibles. First, I hope to do some visiting family like every other retiree! The one thing I won't have to do: Move South! I'm already here I can skip that step.

I think you can see why my mind wasn't on book hunting during my recent trip to Tarpon Springs! A nice overnight trip included a short sponge hunting demonstration by this Greek Diver - ompa!

Saturday continued with dinner on St. Pete beach to celebrate 3 November birthdays and enjoy Bob's daughters visiting from MI (2 of the birthday "girls".

The night ended with Bob and me bringing Sweet Baby "J" home with us for his first overnight without his mom and dad. Jalen is 6 months and behaved very well. What was funny was how he jabbered all of the way home Sunday night - I'm sure he was telling his mom everything he did! I sure hope he didn't tell any tales.

Palm Beach Visit

This weekend I had a great visit to Palm Beach. I stayed with a girlfriend in her condo located right on the beach. All I had to do was get up and go to the windows to see the Atlantic - what a life. Actually I didn't know that Palm Beach was an island or that the Inter-Coastal waterway was "right there". There is a lot to learn about FL. I also didn't know that there were sugar cane fields between us and Palm Beach - there is a very big difference between the trip across the state on 80 verses Alligator Alley. I saw the sugar cane burning on 80, no alligators. I saw gas stations in the small towns, no signs saying fill up now or risk dying!

The Worth Avenue shopping was over-the-top - not my type of thing. But the consignment and thrift store shopping was wonderful. Oh, the things that are available there in thrift shops is amazing. Art work, statues, furniture and collectibles. My girlfriend and I went into at least a dozen shops. I bought only two books but hopefully will be able to sell them for a bit of a profit. I didn't find many stores that "bothered" with books. It would have seemed to me that books would be a higher priority but maybe the residents send the books they don't want to auction there instead of to consignment shops?

I wouldn't want to live in Palm Beach but there were a number of small communities, like Lake Worth, that would do quite nicely. My friend and I ate an early dinner sitting outside the restaurant watching the other diners and shoppers. There were bands setting up for music later in the evening and some walking on the street and sitting at the tables had their pets with them. How refreshing! Goodness, I even saw a child eating out with their parents - how charming.

After hearing about the Breakers Hotel for so many years, I walked through it and got some photos. I saw the church that the Kennedys attend when in the area and drove by Mira Largo and Trump Towers. There is no parking on the street for Mira Largo so I didn't get to get much of a view (too bad).

It was good to see my friend again but also good to have a tour guide for the area. We had both great food and shopping and great views and walks on the beach. I hope the books I bought are really good also!

Religion and Science

I bought a 1923 copy of The Bookman at an antique fair last weekend because of an article "Religion for the Faithless" (if I remember the title correctly). I found the article to be very interesting. Science, the author says, does not end people's belief's in (or need for) religion any more than the scientific understanding of sex ends the quest for love.

Maybe because our understanding of science changes, our need for an emotional connection to both one another and to the universe continues.

This was long before TIME asked "Is God Dead?". I think the author has a good point. Religion and science can live together in peaceful harmony! They address different needs - they aren't opposing answers to the same question. I'm comfortable with this conclusion: religion speaks to our need to know the "why" of the universe while science speaks to the need to know "how".

I got my money's worth on that purchase! Madlyn

Harold and the Purple Crayon by Crockett Johnson. The publisher is Harper & Brothers. The best information I can find is that it was published between 1955 and 1963. There is no d.j. to help identify it. First editions were published with an illustrated cover, this is plain brown with a light/while lettering on the cover.

Booking in Tarpon Springs, FL

About 125 miles north of Punta Gorda, FL is a cute little town, Tarpon Springs. It is on route 19, near Clearwater. I don't know the history of the town but it seems to be the sponge capitol of FL with a big Greek influence. Greek restaurants, Greek clothing, Greek food stores, etc. You can very easily bring back a Greek peasant blouse, dress or a more formal and exciting belly dancing costume!

Of course, being an "Old" Bag Lady, I didn't purchase the Belly Dancing Costume but maybe next time, after I retire I could take lessons??? I mean, being a woman "of a certain age" means I to keep moving, right? At least I'd have the basics I need for the class (I have a belly!).

But, I did go looking for books as Tarpon Springs advertises a lot of antique shops in the downtown area and indeed, they are there. But they are very, very book challenged in the antique stores. I don't know why - most antique areas have at least one book dealer within the antique malls - a specialist used/rare book dealer who just doesn't want to have a store. This wasn't the case in downtown Tarpon Springs.

I did find one booth that was mostly books but they weren't even trying to be specialists. They were $1.00 books in pretty good shape but not ones that any book dealer would be interested in. Just common books - not even store stock (they would be on the $1.00 table out front of any used book store).

So, after passing on the books and all of the glass antiques, booth after booth of glass collectibles (dishes in particular), even full stores of red glass dishes (well maybe some dish was white but I didn't stay long enough to see it) we went to the touristy section and I loved it.

There were lots of people walking around the shops which are located right next to water with tourist boats waiting to take us out for a cooling ride on the water. There was an art show set up in tents, lots of ice cream and cold drinks and Greek food. Lots of Greek food and beer and sweets!

If you haven't added Tarpon Springs to your list of places to visit when you're in the area/state, maybe while you're at the St. Petersburg book fair (in March every year), consider doing so. And you will get to go over the beautiful Skyline bridge, see a great view of what has to be a great fishing pier!

After all, you're writing off the trip to the fair, might as well add in a side trip and get some great Greek Food and well, maybe pick up that belly dancing costume.

R.I.P. Page, the Book Store Dog

1996 - 2009 Page passed away this morning.

We loved Page. We got her 13 years ago to be a watch dog (we lived in the country) and be in the book store. Since then, Page has lived in condos mostly and we never received a complaint about her barking. She didn't bite - see the photo with the pet bird - she was very gentle.

As an "entertainment center" for the book store, she preferred to trip customers coming into the store by lying in front of the door than being petted. Page was a lazy dog! I don't know if that was because of her Black Lab or Kerry Blue Terrier part but she was lazy. She wouldn't chase a ball or frizbee (we'd just throw it again and what sense did that make).

Page loved Sandy Pines, a resort camping location in southern Michigan. She loved to swim in the clear, calm water and ride on our golf cart - ears blowing in the wind.

The only book Page destroyed in 13 years was one volume on Detroit that I'd just had recovered. I don't know if it was the glue she smelled or what but she chewed the spine off of the new binding. One destroyed book in 13 years is better than my record.

Page loved going on trips - in the RV or car - but she wasn't happy to share the backseat with the bird! She put up with it but she didn't like sharing. We could leave Page in any motel room to go to dinner - as long as our suitcases were there and we turned on the TV she never barked at other travelers. If we weren't home, she didn't bark either - she protected US, not the location she was in. Any thief could have walked in to the HOUSE (as long as he didn't knock) if we weren't home and there would be no problem - if we were home, she barked whenever my husband would even hug me! She preferred a 'hands off' policy!

At 91, I guess Page has a right to rest eternally. But I bet she is visiting with Grandma now and letting her old bird friend, Frankie, walk all over her and her cat friend Casper will puuurrrr a lot upon seeing her. We will continue to miss Page, The Book Store Dog - the best friend we could have had.

New Book Van Decision Made

Thanks to all who gave me suggestions on how to shop for the new van. I think I tried just about every hint - and ended up buying locally but feeling as though I got the best price I could negotiate. This is a Town & Country Touring van, 2006 with 31,000 miles. I got a 5.5% interest rate.

This does tie in with a bigger issue book related issue, however. We complain daily (if not hourly) about books not being available when ordered on any of the databases. We hold ourselves and others to a 100% perfection/satisfaction rate or berate their/our professionalism if not characters. But not one of the on-line cars I called about was available - already sold.

Now in the grand scheme of things, I'd think that more people would be upset about a $14,000 car not being available than a $10.00 book. But each dealership just said that the car was sold but lucky me, they had another (totally different brand even) van available that they were sure I'd like if I'd just come in to see it. It didn't matter whether the dealership I called was across the country or in the next city, the story was the same.

If car dealerships can't keep track of the cars/vans on their websites I think maybe we (and customers) should lighten up just a bit on our expectations of perfection of on-line book dealers. We can say something to the customer that we are sorry but this slipped through our standards of perfection! It happens, life's short, move on. Truly, I'm not suggesting we act in a slipshod way but maybe the next time someone is setting the rules at Amazon and Alibris about this perfection thing, we can ask them to consider giving us just a little more slack. I'm pretty sure I won't misplace any $14,000 books - or forget to take it off the internet when I sell it - like all those car dealers did.

I didn't get a new van - even with the government incentives because, well, jeez folks, I just couldn't afford it. I wonder how many people driving old clunkers can afford to trade them in for a brand new car? I turned in the Ford Taurus - less mileage on the new van than on the old Taurus - boy, I'll miss that car (24 mpg, premium sound, multi cd player). But now I can haul books again - looking towards my upcoming retirement. Madlyn

Saturday night my friends Narges, Cathy and Serena took me to dinner and drinks at a rooftop bar at a new hotel in Punta Gorda, FL - the weather was great, the mohitos (sp?) were great, the music was fun and the the company couldn't be more fun! Mixed Marriages - A humorous look

Just Thinking...
Back in the 50s (before I was aware of such things), a 'mixed marriage' involved people of different religions - a Catholic and Protestant couple primarily with an occasional Jewish and Christian couple as I understand my social history.

In the late 60s and 70s, a 'mixed marriage' tended to be a mixed race couple - usually Black and Caucasion (that marriage mix didn't occur much before the 1960s because of anti-miscegenation laws in many states).

I would say that the next stage of 'mixed marriages" would be same sex unions - except, of course, marriage isn't a part of the equation. I think that the same societal uproar is heard about the coupling regardless of the actual marriage.

However serious, today I think that the real mixed marriage is between "green" people and "non-green" people! You know - "green people" those who recycle, reuse, use up, buy less, and basically believe in leaving a very light footprint on the earth.

The "non-green" people are those who tear off a full section of a paper towel, make a one time swipe over a wet spot on the counter and toss out the paper towel! (They could have used a dish towel and let it dry - no paper towel at all!)

Living with any roommate is difficult. Marriage is difficult. But living with a roommate to whom you are married is very difficult when you don't have the same recycling goals. One person tosses the newspaper in the trash along with the barely wrinkled paper towel, the other one wants to use washable cloth towels and put the weeks' newspaper in the recylcle bin.

"Green" people don't toss out the plastic containers that come with frozen food (if they are pressured into buying frozen food in plastic dishes - at least they will reuse the containers) but the non-green person just tosses the once used items into the trash with the non-recycled newspapers! The horror of it all.

It is shocking how many more times a day that recycling comes into play than race or religion. While Christmas must cause some areas of conflict for the Jewish/Christian couple and mixed race couples may have color issues periodically (how long to sit in the sun?), recycling, reusing and reducing is a daily/hourly opportunity for frustration and irritations.

I think that the sociologists better jump on this problem very quickly. There seem to be no laws against green/non-green marriages - and I'm pretty sure that this very important social issue is going to cause more and more divorces! Or injuries :( Speak up - don't let this happen in your family!

This is an adorable juvenile book. I understand that the illustrator: Vernon Grant, was the same one who developed the Rice Krispie cereal image. The illustrations in the book are clean and bright. There is no prior owners name or other handwriting. The publisher is The Junket Folks, Little Falls, NY. I cannot find a date, however. I'm guessing that it was done in the early 1940s but am still researching the date.

There is some minor paper pulling away from boards in the spine area. I'm scanning both front and back for your review. $65.00 ppd. in U.S.

Leave Me Alone, I'm Reading

The audio book I'm listening to is by a/the book reviewer for NPR, Maureen Corrigan: Leave Me Alone, I'm Reading. It is reviews of the various books she has read - if you like her NPR reviews I suppose you'll like this 7 CD book. I have to drive with my dictionary open - if there is a common word that can be replaced with a graduate level literature lecture word, then she selects the later.

Maybe I wouldn't need the dictionary if I'd read some of the books to which she refers but I haven't heard anyone use "sysaphean" task in quite some time (ok, never). And I don't think I've ever heard the word "fictive". It isn't a big word but who uses it? I looked it up in wiktionary and sure enough, the very first definition is "fictional" - why not use it in place of fictive in one or two places?

The author is/was a literature professor and spends a lot of time comparing her theory on "female extreme adventure" to the male extreme adventure: Quindlen's Black & Blue to The Perfect Storm with many other examples. But I didn't sign up for a class in Extreme Adventure: Male or Female. I'm "just a reader" who hoped for some brief reviews of many of the books she has read.

Maureen must have been writing for a very small, specific audience but if you are looking for some interesting book suggestions you might plow through these CDs. I'm going to try to make it through the remainder of the CDs as she has some interesting biographical information tossed in. I'm really glad I didn't try to major in literature in college now and, after listening to her "faint praise" of her mother, I'm glad she isn't my daughter! And I'll bet we'll never be friends although I can use one obtuse word in a sentence: pedantic.

E. Th (Theodore) Douwes Dekker

What I have found so far (thanks to everyone who helped!) is that the artist's name is E. Theodore Douwes Dekker. The last name is both names, just not hyphenated. He was born in 1915 and died in 1995.

There was an auction in 2006 of a water color done by Dekker. I can't read the details so am posting the information here in hopes that someone reading this can translate it for me. I'd also like help finding any children of his or the auction house where this auction was held (and selling price if possible). Thank you for any assistance you can provide.

I'm trying to find a reference to E. Tn (or In) Douwes Dekker, an artist who did a chalk of a beautiful dark skinned woman signed Oct. 1984.

I thought I had found him but 1st guy mentioned below died in 1950. I can't find a reference to a son of his but maybe if you have one of the books cited below you can help me out? I would like to know who the woman in the chalk is - his wife? Mother? Is she Islamic? When did the artist die and where? I own the art piece but can't find the artist listed anywhere. I have a very nice copy of: The Unconquered Seminole Indians, published in 1957. This book by Irvin M. Peithmann and published by the Great Outdoors Association in St. Petersburg, FL was illustrated by black and while photos and reproductions of old prints. The colorful cover art is by Jim Deakley (if I'm reading it properly!). This softcover 94 page book is in vg+ condition, includes a bibliography.

The "about the author" says that the author took a leave of absence from Southern Illinois University to do the Seminole research deep into the Everglades from St. Petersburg, FL, his main base of operation. $35.00 plus shipping.

How do men do it?

Everything is "pocket" or "key ring" sized now - but where do men keep all this stuff on a book hunting trip?

Women have purses (many of which are so large now that our shoulders have rotator cuff tears) but good grief - men can't have this many pockets?

The key ring has to have the PayPal security key ring decoder on it, a pen attached, a small magnifying glass, the camera's card reader and a GPS receiver. In addition you have the a library check out membership code, and the office supply and drug store discount code key ring cards.

The Pocket guide for identifying first editions and one for help remembering the author pseudonyms and a list of your customers' wants.

Then add the cell phone/blackberry and camera to your pockets and some money, the pocket guide to bookstores & antique malls and pretty soon your pockets are full!

Now this doesn't include your tube of hand lotion, your anti-germ cleanser, kleenex for the problem that dust causes and sun screen to prevent skin cancer.

It doesn't include your computer & charger, the cell, camera, phone and GPS chargers (for both motel and car.

Wasn't the idea of having a laptop computer supposed to help us travel more efficiently? We didn't anticipate the additional luggage we'd need however!

Women have purses and men never can figure out what is in those big heavy things - but I can't figure out where men put their essentials! - OH, yes I do - they're called RVs - men's version of a purse - something to carry just the bare essentials in!

St. Petersburg, FL Booking & Antiquing

Some days are just more fun than others! Today my husband and I took the opportunity to attend an antique fair at the St. Petersburg, FL Coliseum. When we arrived at 9:50AM we were about #20 in a line that grew to maybe 100 people by the 10:00 AM opening. I hope that was an indication of a good attendance for all 3 days of the fair.

The Coliseum is a lovely facility - the site of part of the filming of "Cocoon" years ago. The booths were all great looking and the dealers that I spoke with were friendly. Lighthouse Books was there with a big alcove booth. Michael Slicker is a mainstay of the St. Pete and FL rare book world = I hope he had a really good show.

After the fair, Bob and I looked in a few stores on Central Ave. and then spent an hour at least in Haslam's Used Books store. How often do you see a used book store that has been around for 60 years? Haslam's carries used/rare books as well as used, new and remaindered books, cards,etc. It was an enjoyable experience and the store was busy with about 5 people in line to checkout when I left. Hopefully they will be able to stay in business for another 60 years - I love success!

Our weather is nice, cone on down to FL and visit some of the used book stores on the western side of the state. And for the ladies: there are some great upscale clothing consignment shops in St. Petersburg, Sarasota and, of course, Naples!

This is a very pretty place! Hot tubs, large warm (85) pool for swimming and games, computer room, exercise room, fishing, biking, music for dancing at night by pool, tiki bar and a dog park that Page just loves! Page jumps out of the car and heads right toward the dog area. We let her off the leash and she does absolutely nothing except smelling the other dogs scents and pees - no running, no catching the balls, no initiated socialization with any other dogs present - but she goes there at least 6 times a day! I don't 'get it' - but she is happy so (Mostly) Bob keeps takes her.

Macatawa, MI

L. Frank Baum, author of the OZ children's books, had a cottage in Macatawa, MI - called the Sign of the Goose - on Lake Michigan. Many of the old time locals like to believe that their elderly (or former) aunt Dorothy was the inspiration for the main character. When I had an open book shop in Holland, MI I had many customers tell me proudly about their relationship to Baum's main character. Of course, Frank Baum didn't actually purchase the cottage until after the book sold (but who wants to ruin a good story). The author may have visited Macatawa prior to purchasing the cottage but I was unable to find any source material to prove it - but that didn't mean he wasn't there, just that the records weren't available at the time.

Last week I revisited the area again. There isn't much to visit that is actually Macatawa that is public. There is a miniature sized post office with the Macatawa name but it is a small office sized thing located in a yacht storage building (the yacht club is across the busy street).

I was able to walk about 1/2 mile to see BIG RED, the origianal light house on the beach by all of the cottages in the area but I couldn't drive there. Jay Van Andel (of Amway fame) purchased much of the area and made it private but due to the local hue and cry, he allows non-residents to walk out to the lighthouse but not drive to it. The fishermen weren't thrilled to have to carry all of their tackle, etc. to fish off the seawall but it was the compromise.

I've included a photo of the guard gate Van Andel put up to make sure you don't drive in to fish or use the private beach. You can rent a cottage still and spend the lazy days of summer on the private beach without the throngs of us unwashed commoners.

There are no businesses in the area except for one art gallery, Piper's restaurant in Eldean's marina and a little resort - marine clothing shop in the marina. It isn't like the old days when you could vacation within the community and walk to purchase ice cream, etc. Those were the days! I'm posting some photos - I hope you enjoy seeing what L. Frank Baum's quaint vacation area has become. It is gorgeous but only enjoyable if you rent or own a cottage there.

The chapel is in the middle of the "town" which are some stores in lovely buildings around the square with apts or condos upstairs.

The library is currently 2 stories, L shaped - when it is time to expand they will add another "L" and designed for that option. The library is a quiet place! Yea, an old fashioned approach to a library.

The land was donated by the Collier family - old tomato fields way out in the middle of nowhere with 10 miles of a 2 lane road to get there and lots of bugs (no see'ums) in the afternoon, I didn't ask about alligators - after all , this is FL - of course there are alligators!

The library group I was with got a tour of the library and when we came to the cataloging room - WOW! Boxes and boxes and hundreds more boxes of books! It was hard to leave without a sample!

The most valuable item they say they have at this time is a "hand written" Torah - $65,000. It was donated by someone who had no ties with the University and isn't Catholic - he just wanted a tax write-off and hoped the University would do some business with him. I didn't see any other rare books but I saw the rare book acquisition office so I assume they will have some in the future. I didn't get a hand out so can't tell you how many books the library currently owns but many are still in storage. The librarian is a delightful man who had retired 5 years before this opportunity was offered to him. That is all. Madlyn

Maybe you have an art reference book or have read something about Dekker? I understand that the name is Dutch and an early relative was a famous author and politician who also lived in Indonesia and his third wife was Muslim (thanks for the help on getting that information!)
